CGI : Computer-generated imagery (CGI) in movies

What is CGI ?
CGI or Computer- generated imagery is the application of the field of computer graphics to special effects. CGI is used in films, television programs, and in printed medias.

Why CGI ?
CGI is used for visual effects because the quality is often higher and effects are more controllable than other more physically based processes, such as constructing miniature for effects shots or hiring extras for crowd scenes. It can also allow the artist  to produce content without the use of actors, expensive set pieces or props.

When is CGI invented in movie industry?
2D CGI was first used in movies in 1973's Westworld, though the first use of 3D Wireframe imagery was in its sequel, Futureworld ( 1976).

Tron ( 1982) and The Last Starfighter (1984), were commercial failures, causing most directors to relegate CGI to images that were supposed to look like they were created by a computer.

How does CGI works in movies?
It all begins with an artist who makes drawings, photographs or clay models that show what the director wants. This could be a car being crushed by the Hulk, an actor doing impossible fight moves who coexist with rel actors in the final film. From these models and drawings, a person called modeler works with three-dimensional shapes on the screen to create a matching computer model.

When the model is perfect, an animator tells the computer how the model should move; for example how the car flips over when Hulk steps on it.

Once the modelling and animation complete, an imaginary camera and lights are set up within the computer and a program called a renderer runs for a long time to create images that show the moving 3D model. A technical director fine-tunes the lighting and the materials, rendering the scene over and over until it looks just right. The CG images then combined with the live-action elements using compositing software that seamlessly blend them to create the final frames of the film.

What is example of CGI in movies industry?
Some of the example of CGI movies and games are Lord Of the Rings, Avatar, Shrek, Final Fantasy and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The best thing of CGI is, it can change the form of people and emotions of the actors or actresses in a movie. For example, in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button where Brad Pitt as a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.
